2010 Tournament Wrap-up
-Mr. Cunningham

By all indications, our first regional tournament was a tremendous success! Thank you sincerely to all the volunteers, competitors, and parents who made the entire thing possible!
According to our Regional Chief of Tournaments, Mr. Dennis Stansfield, we had a total of 143 competitors at the Big Sky Showdown 2010! (Considering we were expecting only about 120, this is a great turn-out.) Our many guests from outside Region 119D contributed significantly to our total number of competitors and we thank them for making the long trip to Montana! In fact, the 44 out-of-region event-competitors were the third-highest attending group, behind only our school (78 event-competitors) and Mrs. Frederick's academy in Helena (45 event-competitors).

Our tournament hosted a total of 19 color belt divisions and 23 black belt divisions. Within those divisions, there were 16 Tiny Tigers participating; 137 competitors participated in traditional forms and sparring; 79 competed in traditional weapons; 33 competed in the Xtreme forms and weapons competition; 30 took part in Creative forms and weapons; and 15 students competed in the very first Combat Weapon Sparring event in our region! When all was said and done, we hosted 310 event-competitors, which is an impressive total for a first-time tournament.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Jennifer Iglinski and the staff and MSU sports Facilities; Breann Ojala and everyone at the Holiday Inn; the folks at Insty-Prints and Sign-A-Rama for their usual great work; Cherie Langley from Crown Awards (happy retirement, ma'am!); and all our sponsors! If our academy continues to support other tournaments in our region, we could host another tournament in 2012.

“If I get my black belt, it will mean a lot. It means if I put my mind to a goal, I can achieve it.”

    -Wilson M.
