Who can study Taekwondo?
Anyone can study taekwondo! There is no minimum fitness level or maximum age, just a willingness to do your best and learn. We believe in offering students “personal victory”; allowing them to excel within their own age/fitness limitations while helping them to expand their horizons.
Can girls do taekwondo?
Yes! In fact, because taekwondo uses the large muscles of the legs in its many kicking techniques, it is exceptionally well-suited to female practitioners. Many people feel women actually have an advantage in kicking techniques because of their greater hip flexibility.
Will I/my child get hurt in taekwondo?
Our students’ safety is our primary concern. From the beginning, our students are taught to treat their training partners with respect and to always use self control. Students don’t spar with one another for at least six months after they begin classes; when they do, they use controlled contact in full sparring gear under the supervision of an instructor. As with any sport, the occasional bump or bruise is almost inevitable, but serious injuries in our school have been extremely rare.
Do you teach self defense?
Yes! Our regular martial arts classes are an excellent basis for self defense. Most importantly, our students learn confidence, which helps them to not act like potential victims in the first place. Instructors are available to teach tailored self defense seminars to groups of four or more students. See the Classes page for more information.
Do you teach mixed martial arts?
No. However, we are in the process of partnering with Ternion Academy to offer jujitsu classes in our facility in the near future. Please call for more information.
Are you affiliated with other schools in Montana?
At this time, there are only two American Taekwondo Association schools in Montana: ours and Frederick’s ATA Black Belt Academy in Helena. The ATA is the largest martial arts organization in the US, however, and one of the largest in the world with more than 1,500 schools world-wide. Our ATA region, which covers Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah currently has 14 schools.
Does taekwondo involve praying, meditating, or other religious practices?
No. In fact, a study by the Christian Science Monitor several years ago found taekwondo to be the martial art with the least “religious influence” – because there isn’t any. We have students from many different backgrounds and traditions and everyone gets along because of one simple rule: No religion and no politics in the academy.
